Running scared

You may have noticed that after my enthusiastic post some months ago about my newfound love of Running, I went very quiet on the subject. This is because around 8 weeks ago, I gave myself a mild case of shin splints, and, following two weeks rest, during my very next run, I tripped over a tree root and tore something in my knee. Four frustrating weeks were spent trying to rest it and it inevitably getting sore after doing every day things; but it gradually got better and I started training again only two weeks ago. I’ve done two two-mile runs, one six miler and an eight mile jaunt with my brother and running partner, and I am therefore woefully underprepared for Sunday’s Run to the Beat Half Marathon, but I am going to give it my damned best shot. See?

Since I was unsure whether I’d even be able to enter, I haven’t even thought about my ‘vintage style’ running outfit, nor have I begged much for sponsorship. Our charity Beating Bowel Cancer is a super worthy one, and we chose it because it’s a disease that runs in our family. And there has to be a reason and motivation for me nearly killing myself! 😉 I was quite worried we wouldn’t make our target. But I’m glad to say that thanks to my friends, and my brother’s friends and work colleagues, we’re nearly there! Should anyone feel like throwing a few pounds or dollars (other currencies also appreciated) our way, we’d really appreciate it.We only need a few more people to bung us two quid and we’re there. FYI, I will be in red lippy as promised, but likely I’ll be in the above, super sexy Nike capris. Ah well.

Good luck hon and a mighty fine cause, my Dad died from bowel cancer and unbelievably my Mum got it the following year, but she's ok as of now after an op.

I may eventually get into running but going to the gym/swimming 6 times a week is enough for me for now(just started 3 weeks ago) feels good though!



Susie – mine is from M&S about 4 years ago. And no, it's crap. I need a new one – their later models look great as they have racer backs etc. If money was no object, I'd get a shock absorber.

Here is a tip to prevent shin splints:

When warming up, tap your foot back and forth for a few minutes. You will feel your shin muscle begin to burn. That is a good thing because it is warming up the muscle which will help prevent the shin splints. I tap forward for a bit and then back and forth- really works for me!

I started running a few months back and did the same thing – however, my shin splits were a bit more severe, taking me 6 weeks to recover! I may have done extra damage now realising what they were at first and continuing to run on them for 2 weeks before I stopped.

A worthy cause so good luck – and I wish I could be at the vintage sale!x


for marathon training I recommend doing the "Crossfit" endurance exercise program which basically focuses on doing a series of short (7 minutes) high intensity workouts rather than long runs to train for marathons (or other endurance activities). in this way you are less likely to wear out your joints and get injuries from long weekly runs but you are still training your system to handle the endurance part through the short bursts of intensity workouts. "Punk Rope" is another good intensity workout that is fun! There is a good chapter on "crossfit" in the book "The 4 hour body".
I also recommend the "T-Tapp" exercise video to rehabilitate old injuries and lose inches. Good luck to you! I just did my first bicycle marathon of 60 miles!


Good luck on Sunday (and with the shin splints!) I suffered pretty badly from them when I was dancing and they KILL.
