My modelling year – done!

Sorry for not updating in almost 2 weeks, I really don’t know where the time goes. Since my last post I have been on a Yoga weekend in Sussex, followed by a rockabilly weekender, also in Sussex, but worlds apart in terms of activities! During the first weekend I ate mountains of delicious, organic, vegetarian food, doing yoga (of course!) and walking through the beautiful English countryside. The weather was marvellous and we covered over 12 miles in the space of two days. No pictures though… it wasn’t my most glamorous weekend ever!

The following one though, was a very different story! I went to Rhythm Riot, my first ever weekender! I jived, lindied, jitterbugged, bopped and strolled my way through three days and nights of fabulous vintage shopping and fashion, and had an absolute blast! Was I ever exhausted by the end! I also did a bit of modelling with ace photographer Tony Rusecki, partly for Shona who makes fabulous repro fashions and partly for Rocket Originals who make lovely shoes and jumpers. They have me two jumpers to say thank you! Here’s a preview, both of the shoot and of the jumpers. Watch this space for more!

Here are some more of my purchases from the weekend:
A lovely repro coat from La Riviera

Two pairs of shoes, both great for dancing. The red ones are from Rocket.

A fabulous pair of fruit earrings. I’ve wanted some like this for ages! So Carmen Miranda!

There are a couple of photos from the weekend – I look horribly shiny and sweaty in them!
Me, Natasha Hall the fabulous makeup artist and champion Lindy Hopper, Tony Rusecki, photographer extraordinare, and the gorgeous and wonderful Shona van Beers.
Shona and I, after much dancing!

Finally, and the meaning behind my blog title: I did my very last shoot of 2008 yesterday. What a year. I began 2008 as a novice model, with a mere two shoots under my belt, and ended it as a much more experienced and confident one, with 18(ish, I have lost count and too tired to work it out!) behind me. Just for fun, here’s my favourite shot from my first shoot of 2008:

And here’s the latest:

And that’s a wrap, folks!

“I’m gonna live forever…!”

Fame! Well, sort of. I was actually in the London Lite newspaper on Friday, but unfortunately I had the afternoon off work and didn’t pick up a copy. Luckily some lovely people saved me a copy, and the feature was put online. Behold!

I don’t know that chap at all, he’s just someone the photographer evidently decided looked cool and asked us to post together! You can read the article here. If only they had put my name! I also wish I could have been on the tube at rush hour in case anyone recognised me or did a double-take! Hee hee.

In other news, the demise of the not-so-Great British Pound has made me cry a little inside. Not before I bought a couple of things though, namely, my first ever Bakelite pieces! Not being an expert, I do hope they are genuine Bakelite. The pictures and the sellers’ reputations do point to authenticity. And it doesn’t matter hugely I suppose. They weren’t vastly expensive, but neither were they suspiciously cheap!

Bangle from eBay

Earrings from Ruby Lane

I also bought a couple of things from my favourite eBay shop, Top Runway. I bought the Jessie Dress in dark green:

as modelled here by my fabulous friend Miss Matilda, and this skirt in the red ‘tweedy’ fabric:

which I hope will turn out well. Can’t wait to get them … next thing to worry about is Christmas. What’s on everyone’s wishlists?

In the newspaper…

…but sadly I didn’t know about it until afterwards!

Last Sunday, the Independent did a huge feature on Austerity, with dancing, gardening and interior design articles, as well as a big one about the forthcoming book that I modelled for, called A Stitch In Time. And there was a picture of me in it! Unfortunately, I had no idea it was coming out so I didn’t buy a copy. I’m hoping to get hold of one though, and the article and the picture are online, so hooray for technology! It is only the back of my head but it’s still a nice picture!

Read the article here and follow the links to all the others – there are some great ones there! Funnily enough, a reporter from the Independent emailed me a few weeks ago about an article on wartime fashion she wanted to do, I can only assume it was for that issue. However she changed her mind after a couple of emails back and forth, and decided to focus on interiors instead … unfortunately the most vintage piece of furniture I have is from the late 90s! Oh well. However my chance might come again because on Saturday night I was actually snapped at a dance by a London Lite photographer for a piece on Lindy Hop, so look out for me in a Friday issue in a couple of weeks, Londoners!

I splurged on a lovely dress the other day, which I now won’t be able to wear until next summer. But I couldn’t resist, because I bought a very similar pinafore dress last year, which was much too small and short for me (wishful thinking on my part) and it got donated to my best friend. But with the exception of the fabric, this one is identical and it’s my size! Hooray!

Finally, my work has decided to have a Bond themed Christmas party. We have to ‘Dress to Kill” of course, but I feel I should dress as a particular Bond character, but which one? After my Mario costume adventure I am not averse to dragging it up either! Ooh, decisions!

Busy busy busy!

Dear all,

Sorry I haven’t updated in ages, since I returned from holiday, work’s been mad and I have been exhausted! Staying up super late to watch the election was probably not the best idea, but what a night! I’ve been on a real high ever since!

Did everyone have a wonderful Halloween? I went to a Hawaiian-themed night called Hulaween, and got dressed up for the occasion (though not in a Hawaiian outfit, oh no!). I was Super Mario(n)! I now want to start my own plumbing company and drive around in a vintage truck wearing my fab overalls!

Good plan huh?

I haven’t had any shoots since the last one, though I am super excited because I’m going to Rhythm Riot in a couple of weeks’ time. It’s a rock ‘n’ roll weekender held on the coast, and though it’s bound to be chilly, there will be lots of dancing and socialising to warm me up! While I’m there I’m having a shoot with Tony Nylons of The Casting Couch fame, which should be fabulous. I’m also off for a weekend of yoga and relaxation with my best friend next Friday, which I am so looking forward to.

I’ve now twice been awarded the I Love Your Blog Award, once by the lovely Pretty Little Pictures aka the paper doll and once by the fabulously stylish Super Kawaii Mama. I will make my next post a proper passing on of this award to my favourite blogs out there. Thanks to both of those wonderful ladies!

I leave you with one more picture from my last shoot.

Thank you so much to all that have voted for me in the 21st Century Pinups Contest. The comp is still running for another 2 weeks or so, then the top 4 from each category go into a final round, with all previous votes counting towards the total. So please forgive me for mentioning it again, but if you haven’t voted already, please do! If you think I am the best in my category of course….

Bye for now!

Please vote for me!

I’m in the first ever 21st Century Pinups contest!
Sorry to one of those annoying people, but if any of you gorgeous things that read my blog happen to have a moment, would you mind awfully going here and voting for me to win in the Pinup Queen category? You don’t have to enter your email or sign up for anything, and luckily it’s not one of those ‘vote once a day’ type affairs, which drive me barmy.

You do have to vote in the other 3 categories too though, I think. There are some truly great models in my category, so I need all the help I can get! Thank you all!

In other news, I have been having a go at making my own photos look vintage. What do you think?

In other other news, my cats are annoying! Not only do they have fleas (and I’ve run out of Frontline), but they will NOT keep their collars on. I bought them both a new one yesterday, a new stretchy but buckled type (the snap away ones just, well, snap away!) and new ID tags, and when I woke up, one had lost his, and by the time I’d finished my breakfast, so had the other! Furry little blighters!

I have some more shoot pictures and some recent purchases to post, so please check back soon!

Home sweet home

I’m back from my ten day adventure in the Colonies! Did you miss me? I know my kitties did, they’ve hardly left me alone since I’ve been home, bless them. So I’m back to a mountain of washing, a mountain of work and rather a lot of cleaning to boot. But luckily no jetlag to speak of, thanks to British Airways and its half full jumbo jet, allowing me to get some decent sleep for once.

My holiday was a combination of two extremes, in terms of events, activities…and weather! It got off to a bad start on our arrival at Dallas Ft. Worth, where we had a 4 hour layover before going on to Reno. It was lucky we had 4 hours, because just as we joined the queue at immigration, the entire computer system went down, and we were left languishing in that queue for over an hour and a half. No one even apologised or kept us apprised of what was going on, in stark contrast to the usual friendliness I associate with Americans…except for border control staff, so I’m not sure why I was so surprised. Either way, it was not what one needs after an 8 hour flight with another 4 hour one ahead.

The next thing to go wrong was having a lady tell us on the plane to Reno that it was due to snow the next day. Well, great! Served us right for not checking the weather forecast and just thinking, ‘Oh, it’s the desert, it’s bound to be hot!’. And snow it did…I had no coat and my poor mum had no trousers or closed shoes, so we went off to Target to buy cheap jeans, cardigans and socks! The rest of the trip and the conference went well though, and the trip to Pyramid Lake was particularly spectacular. I will post some photos I took as soon as I have uploaded them.

Arizona, in contrast was boiling hot, and so relaxing. We stayed in the Hilton, who looked after us so well, and I met up with some wonderful girls I know through various forums including The Fedora Lounge, who took me vintage shopping and out to see a band. Here we are in Hollywood Regency, where I bought a lovely 60s handbag and a stunning red 40s jacket.

L-r: RedHotRidingHood, Lolita Haze, Pink and me in my prized NOS Swirl dress.

Hopefully I’ll have more to post later when another girl uploads her photos.
It was wonderful to meet the ladies pictured, and I also had the pleasure of meeting Miss Amanda Lee, aka Jitterbug Doll, though sadly we didn’t get a picture together. Sad face.

I also have a lovely dress waiting for me at the post office.
Although the rotters have charged me £11 (and didn’t say that on the card, so I’ve already left once empty handed) even though the blasted thing cost only £1 more than the minimum amount. Well I have dodged fees on many things so I have to be caught out sometime, better to do so on something cheap! If it’s clean, I shall wear it on Halloween, with black seamed fishnets and a witch’s hat. What are you dressing as?

Ah go on then…

Have a couple more! I was going to wait until I had a load and then update my site and direct everyone to there … but I am just so over the moon with these. I am a lucky girl to work with such a marvellous photographer.

You can also read an interview with me in issue 5 of 21st Century Pinups magazine, which came out today!

Tired but happy

This weekend was an adventure alright! Up at dark o’clock and on the train to Wales, where it was raining cats, dogs and elephants all day. But Rebecca Parker was an absolutely perfect hostess and I had a simply wonderful day in her studio. Back to my B&B and I discovered the pub it’s attached to was having a karaoke party. Thank heavens for ear plugs! One sleep and a full-english later, I was on the beach with Rebecca in the gorgeous sunshine. It couldn’t have been more different to the day before.

She’s lightening-fast and has sent me two incredible shots already, one from each day. I am so, so pleased with them.

I love this suit!

If I’m not making much sense, it’s because I am feeling completely zombie-fied and have so very much to do before I go away, including washing, cleaning, going to the library, getting currency, packing of course… and finding my passport would probably be a good idea. See you on the flip-side!

PS. If you head on over to Mademoiselle Robot‘s fantastic blog, you will find 10 tips I wrote for people interested in dressing vintage, whether in part or head-to-toe like me. I hope they are of interest to someone … I’ll be republishing them on my blog at some point!

In the swing of things

I really love swing dancing. Love it, love it, love it. I wish with all my heart I had started learning it five years ago as I could be so good at it by now! However, my best friend Gemma and I are apparently doing extremely well for people who’ve only been learning for a few months. We went to our first dances a fortnight ago, and actually danced with people not from our class … and managed ok! So we were very proud. We also dressed up, and I did Gemma’s hair for her. It was the first time she has ever ‘gone retro’!

I did discover that it’s impossible to take good pictures of people dancing, when you’re new to photography. Particularly when you have your finger over the flash! 😉

See what I mean?

I’m going to miss it terribly for the next two weeks as I am off to America for a holiday. At least that is a good reason to miss it!

I’m off to Reno, Nevada and Phoenix, Arizona with my lovely mum for 10 days. Mum is an author of esoteric books, mainly about angels and self help/healing. If you’re interested in such things, please do check out her website. She’s attending a course in Reno while I check out the sights, and then we’re off to Pyramid Lake, which is a Native American sacred site of some kind. Then to Phoenix, where I’m hoping to meet up with some vintage online friends and do some shopping and relaxing by the pool!

But before I go, I am busy, busy. I am off at 7am tomorrow morning to shoot with the incredible Rebecca Parker, who is one of my absolute favourite photographers, and I am SO excited about it. Worth the early start, for sure. Check out her stunning work on her site, and read her blog.

Then on Wednesday, I am sort of attending, and sort of modelling at the launch party for Nina’s Hair Parlour‘s brand new salon. Nina’s been kind enough to mention me in the press release so I am going to be networking my proverbial off. Next step, world domination! I’ll try to update again before I go away. Toodle pip!

Weddings, part a gazillion

Finally, my wedding season is over! I had a super busy day yesterday. I got up at 7, was in London at 10 for a photoshoot and then went back home and back up to London at 5pm for my aunt’s wedding reception!

The photoshoot went fantastically well. The photographer, Stephen Thorne had come over from Canada for a short trip and I was delighted that he wanted to work with me. He had an idea for a picture that consisted of a vintage-clad girl standing in a crowd while blurry people pass all around. And, well … I think we nailed it! He has sent me a few already, so here’s a taster.

We shot these in the British Museum. We did get permission, but people thought I was working there as a human statue, and a few asked me where the cloakrooms were! My dress is one I haven’t worn before, it’s a repro from an early 40s Hollywood sewing pattern. It’s actually in two parts so I can wear the skirt separately.

So then I went home at about 2pm, changed and picked up my younger cousins Amber, 13 and Scarlett, 12, and headed off to the wedding reception. I wore my Whirling Turban dress again … had to get my money’s worth from it!

I did my hair for the shoot/wedding in the style of Virginia O’Brien, whom I’ve blogged about before. Here she is:

And here I am, this is about 12 hours after I brushed it out!

Not a perfect replica, but I think it turned out quite well!

Here are a couple of photos from the wedding, you can find the rest on my Flickr.

My aunts Joanna (left) and Fiona the bride (in the middle), my younger cousins Alex (19) and Rupert (17), Amber and Scarlett and my gorgeous cousin Natalie, who’s my age.

My younger cousin Alex (19) and I with Scarlett in the bottom. Alex is like a male version of me from 10 years ago … the fashions and music have changed slightly, but it’s still exactly the same!

My mum and dad, and my brother Guy and his girlfriend Louisa. (Poor mum!)

Everyone again with Natalie’s fiance Richard and my uncle Richard!

I hope everyone had fab weekends too!
